ACHAMILLAI, ACHAMILLAI
Mahakavi Bharathi often referred Tamil as his 'mother'. He was fluent in many languages including Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit and English. His said "among all the languages I have known, I do not see any of them, any as sweet as Tamil", was his moving tribute to this mother tongue. Bharathi was active in the freedom struggle against the British rule and was also arrested many a times. It is a pity that he is not that famous within India other than in Tamilnadu even though he had worked with the likes of Gandhi, Tagore and Aurobindi. He was one of the most staunch patriots and nationalists the country has produced.
I believe Tamil has an enormous and rich literature and I do agree with Bharathi that Tamil is the sweetest language. It is also believed that Malayalam (btw, this is the longest mirror word) was a dialect of Tamil. Tamil literature has existed for over two thousand years and some say it is eight thousand years old. Inscriptions in Tamil Language from 1st century BCE and 2nd century CE have been discovered in Egypt and Thailand. It's is spoken by around 52 million people in Indian, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Vietnam and Singapore.
