COIMBATORE STYLE ARISI PARUPPU SADAM
Arisi Paruppu Sadam Recipe - Coimbatore style with step by step pictures. This is a popular main dish from the Coimbatore or Kongunaadu region of Tamil Nadu. It literally translates, dal rice or rice with lentils, a truly comfortable meal, nourishing and wholesome food that we can prepare within 30 minutes. Traditionally, parboiled or sona masoori rice is used to prepared this dish. This rice is not very mushy like sambar sadham, the texture is slightly dry with separate grains and it goes well with potato fry or raw banana fry.
Arisi Paruppu Sadam is also known as "Kavundar Biryani" as mentioned by actor Sivakumar in his book named "Rajapattai". This is a very famous one-pot dish especially in the community called kavundar who form the major population in coimbatore in those days. This dish is must try for everyone who loves delicious and flavorful one-pot meals.

INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup sona masoori rice
- 1/4 cup toor dal
- 3 tbsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 spring curry leaves
- 2 red chilli
- 1 large onion - finely chopped
- 6-7 garlic - finely chopped
- 2 tomatoes - finely chopped
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1.5 tsp sambar powder
- salt - to taste
- 2 - 2.5 cup water
- 1 tbsp ghee - for garnish
PROCEDURE
- wash and soak the rice and the toor dal in water for 15-20 minutes
- heat sesame oil in the pressure cooker pan and temper with mustard seeds and cumin seeds, then followed by curry leaves and red chillies
- add in the finely chopped onions and garlic and fry till the onions are soft and translucent
- now add in the finely chopped tomatoes, turmeric powder and sambar powder
- fry well till the tomatoes are mashed together and the raw smell of spices goes
- add in the water and salt together and mix well. once the water starts to boil vigorously, add in the soaked rice and toor dal
- mix well and close the pan with lid and pressure cook for 3 whistles and then switch off the flame
- serve hot with a tbsp of ghee
- Enjoy!
- this rice tastes very good with sona masoori rice
- adjust spice level according to your taste
- don't forget to add a tbsp of ghee when serving
- use sesame oil for better results
