BARNYARD MILLET UPMA
Upma is a flavorful thick consistency porridge which originates from South Indian households and is popular all over India. Barnyard Millet Upma is delicious breakfast dish which is prepared with barnyard millet and mixed vegetables like beans, carrots and peas. With a twist to the regular upma this millet upma is way more healthy.
Millets are rich in fibre and minerals like calcium, copper and iron which is essential for maintaining a healthy and fit body. This enticing dish can be prepared in less than half an hour which makes it apt for serving as a snack to guests who drop in unannounced. You can serve this delectable upma with coconut chutney, tomato chutney or peanut chutney. You can also pack it for lunch boxes and savor its taste as a quick work bite with your friends.
The crunch of finely chopped veggies with the flavors of ginger and nicely cooked millet, the upma tastes the best. The water ratio of 1:3 works well for this millet to cook perfectly soft and fluffy. If you are a vegetable lover, then you would not want to miss out on this dish. RECIPE FOR BARNYARD MILLET

Ragi Recipes
INGREDIENTS
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1 tsp urad dal
- 1/2 tsp bengal gram dal
- 1 spring curry leaves
- 2 green chillies - chopped
- 1 piece ginger - chopped
- 1 onion - finely chopped
- 1/2 cup veggies - carrot, beans, peas or corn
- 1/2 cup barnyard millet
- 1.5 cup water
PROCEDURE
- rinse and wash the millets in enough water and soak for 10 minutes and then drain the excess water and keep it ready
- heat oil in the pan and temper with mustard seeds, urad dal, bengal gram dal and curry leaves
- saute till the mustard seeds sizzle, then add slitted green chillies, ginger and thinly sliced onions and continue sauteeing till onion turns translucent
- now add chopped vegetables (I have used carrot, beans and green peas), saute for few seconds and followed by add 1.5 cups of water, salt and let the vegetables cook in medium flame with lid covered
- once the water starts to boil vigorously add soaked millet and give a quick mix and keep it covered with lid. let the millets cook in low medium flame for 15 minutes
- once the millets get cooked completely, water would have been absorbed, then switch off the flame and garnish with chopped coriander leaves
- serve with coconut chutney, green chutney or tomato chutney
- Enjoy!
- wash the millets well before cooking
- adjust spice level according to your taste
- add veggies of your choice, you can include bell peppers, corn, etc.,
