CHOLAM SEMIYA UPMA RECIPE | STARTUP COOKING
Cholam semiya Upma is one of the healthy and tasty South Indian breakfast recipe made with vermicelli. Ragi is also known as Sorghum millet or Jowar in Hindi.
Upma is a one pot dish made with some tempering ingredients like onion, green chilli, curry leaves, mustard seeds and Urad Dal. I added my favorite veggies, to make more nutritious upma. It can also be made of rava, vermicelli, poha, sabudana, oats and other millets. Cholam semiya Upma can be served as evening snack also. This recipe goes well with coconut chutney, peanut chutney, sugar or pickle.

To make this Cholam semiya upma I have used Anil brand. Any variety of vermicelli can be used for this recipe. Sorghum is a nutrient packed grain which is rich in vitamins and minerals like B vitamins, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. Also it has an excellent source of fiber, antioxidants and protein. This is a perfect healthy nutritious breakfast for kids. This upma can be made in less than 25 minutes.

RECIPE FOR CHOLAM SEMIYA UPMA

INGREDIENTS
- 180 g cholam semiya (I used Anil Brand)
- 3 tbsp oil
- 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp urad dal
- 1/4 tsp hing
- 1 spring curry leaves
- 4 green chilli - split
- 1/2 tsp ginger - chopped
- 1 large onion - thinly sliced
- 1 cup veggies - (carrot, beans and peas) - boiled
- salt to taste

PROCEDURE
- soak cholam semiya in water for 3 minutes (not more than that)
- drain the water completely using a strainer
- place the semiya in steamer plate or idly plate
- steam the semiya for 8 minutes
- once cooked, transfer the semiya into a broad plate and cool down at room temperature
- now heat oil in a pan
- temper with mustard seeds, Urad Dal, hing, curry leaves, green chillies and chopped ginger
- saute for few seconds
- add thinly sliced onion and saute well until it turn transparent
- add boiled veggies, salt and mix well
- cook for 1 minute
- now add steamed cholam semiya and mix well
- cover and cook for 5 minutes on low flame and then switch off the flame
- delicious Cholam Semiya Upma is ready
- serve hot with coconut chutney or any chutney of your choice
- Enjoy !
- Do not over cook the semiya otherwise the upma will turn out mushy
