Spinach (keerai) poriyal is a quick and tasty side dish recipe that can prepared in 10 minutes. You can use any kind of greens for this recipe. Here I am using baby spinach. 

Spinach is a leafy green vegetable that belongs to the amaranth family. It is considered very healthy and its loaded with lots of nutrients and antioxidants. Eating spinach everyday may benefit eye health, reduce oxidative stress, reduce blood pressure levels and helps to prevent cancer.

RECIPE FOR SPINACH / KEERAI PORIYAL

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp urad dal
  • 1/8 tsp hing
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 1/2 cup onion - chopped
  • 2 green chilli - slitted
  • 3 cup spinach leaves - chopped
  • salt to taste
  • 1/2 cup grated coconut

PROCEDURE

  • heat a tbsp of oil in the pan
  • temper with mustard seeds and urad dal
  • add hing and curry leaves and saute for few seconds
  • add finely chopped onion
  • saute well until transparent
  • add slitted green chilli and saute well until the raw smell goes
  • add chopped spinach leaves
  • saute well in medium flame, leaves starts to release the water
  • mix well, spinach leaves will starts to shrink in size
  • now, add grated coconut and mix well
  • cook for 1 minute and then switch off the flame
  • healthy spinach poriyal is ready
  • serve with sambar rice or rasam rice
  • tastes great
NOTES
  • no need to add any water to this recipe
  • you can replace green chillies with red chillies
  • you can skip grated coconut if you don't like, but the taste will be good
