Arisi rava Upma

Arisi rava upma, a very simple and traditional breakfast recipe. Its a most common breakfast in Southern India. Arisi Upma is made using broken raw rice along with some tempering ingredients and thinly sliced onion. 


Generally Arisi Upma is served with coconut chutney, but I like to pair up with peanut chutney and kids love to have this upma with sugar. This is a very quick and easy go breakfast in busy morning hours. 

The coconut oil is highly preferable to this recipe, which gives a deep aroma to the upma. If you don't like, go with vegetable oil. You can also add vegetables to make more healthier recipe. RECIPE FOR ARISI RAVA UPMA

Arisi rava Upma


INGREDIENTS

  • 1 cup rice rava
  • 2.5 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/8 tsp hing (asafoetida)
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 1 tsp ginger - chopped
  • 3 green chili - slitted
  • 1 onion - thinly sliced
  • salt to taste
  • 3.5 cup water

PROCEDURE

  • dry roast rice rava in a pan until it is hot to touch, remove the rice rava and keep it aside
  • heat oil in a pan
  • add mustard seeds and allow to crackle
  • add urad dal, saute well and allow to change the color
  • add cumin seeds, hing, curry leaves, green chilli and chopped ginger
  • saute for few seconds
  • add thinly sliced onion
  • saute the onions in medium flame until the onions turn translucent
  • add roasted rice rava
  • mix well and cook for 30 seconds
  • add water and salt, mix well
  • cover with lid and cook on low flame for 15 minutes or it gets completely cooked
  • mix well before serving
  • serve hot with sugar, pickle or any chutney of your choice

NOTES

  1. Depending on the rice rava variety, the water quantity will vary
  2. it is important to cook the upma in low flame after adding water
  3. you can add your favorite vegetables to make healthy upma

ARISI RAVA UPMA WITH STEP-BY-STEP PHOTO RECIPE


add 1 cup rice rava in a pan


dry roast rice rava until it is hot to touch and keep it aside


heat oil in a pan


add mustard seeds and allow to crackle, add urad dal, cumin seeds and hing


add curry leaves, slitted green chilli and ginger, saute for few seconds


add thinly sliced onion


saute well until it gets translucent


add roasted rice rava


mix well and cook for 30 seconds


add water


add salt


mix well


cover and cook on low flame for 15-20 minutes or until it gets cooked completely


stir the upma once or twice


mix well before serving, fluffy rice rava upma ready

Arisi Rava Upma, serve hot with any chutney of your choice
