Onion Tomato 🍅 Thokku recipe is a perfect side dish for Idli, Dosa and Chapathi. This Thokku is little spicy, tangy and simply delicious prepared with basic ingredients from the kitchen.
This is one of the popular recipe from South Indian kitchen. This thokku is very easy to cook, no need to grind anything and no need any other vegetables other than onion and tomatoes.
Sesame oil is best choice to make this recipe for better taste and for longer storage. Cook in low flame to get perfect thokku consistency. Store in refrigerator for 3-4 days, it stays good. ONION TOMATO THOKKU RECIPE

INGREDIENTS
- 2 tbsp sesame oil
- 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
- 1/2 tsp urad dal
- 1/4 tsp hing
- 1 spring curry leaves
- 8 garlic - slitted
- 1 large onion - finely chopped
- 3 tomato - chopped
- 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tsp kashmiri red chilli powder (optional)
- 1 tsp red chilli powder
- salt to taste
PROCEDURE
- heat oil in a cast iron wok
- add mustard seeds, allow to crackle
- add urad dal, saute well and allow to turn slight brown color
- add hing and curry leaves, allow the leaves to turn crisp
- add sliced garlic, saute well
- add finely chopped onion, saute well till it turn translucent
- add chopped tomato
- saute well
- add turmeric powder, red chili powder, Kashmiri red chilli powder and salt
- mix well
- add 1/2 cup water
- cover and cook in low flame for 15 minutes or until the raw smell of spice powder goes
- once oil separates from the thokku, switch off the flame
- serve with idli, dosa, chapathi and uthappam

Notes
- store in refrigerator for 2-3 days, stays good
- add little more extra oil for travel or longer storage
- Kashmiri red chili powder is totally optional

heat oil in a cast iron wok

saute well till it turn translucent

saute well until it turn mushy
add turmeric powder, Kashmiri red chili powder, red chilli powder and salt
mix well and cook in low flame for 15 minutes or until the raw smell goes
continue to cook until it turns thick or like thokku consistency
oil starts to separate from thokku
onion tomato thokku ready
serve with idli or dosa or chapathi
store in refrigerator for 3 days, stays good
