Sambar using yellow moong dal is so light on the stomach and very easy to digest. In this recipe, i have not used tamarind, sambar powder and its so easy to make. Just cook moong dal in pressure cooker and mix with basic seasonings like onion, tomato, green chilli and mustard seeds. This recipe goes well with Idli and dosa. This is my Mom Favorite recipe. MOONG DAL SAMBAR VIDEO RECIPE



INGREDIENTS
  • 1 cup yellow moong dal
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp hing/asafoetida
  • 1 large onion - thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato - chopped
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 3 green chilli - slitted
  • 1 tsp ginger - grated
  • 1 large onion - thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato - chopped
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • salt as needed
  • 1/4 cup coriander leaves - chopped

PROCEDURE
  • take 1 cup moong dal in a vessel
  • wash and add water in moong dal
  • pressure cook moong dal for 3 whistle
  • mash well using ladle or blender and keep it aside
  • heat oil in a pan
  • add mustard seeds, urad dal and hing, saute well
  • add curry leaves and allowed to turn crisp
  • add green chilli and grated ginger
  • saute well
  • add thinly sliced onion
  • saute well until it turn translucent
  • add chopped tomato and saute well 
  • add turmeric powder and salt
  • mix well
  • add mashed yellow moong dal and add more water (consistency of the sambar should be very thin)
  • mix well
  • allow to boil for 5 minutes or until frothy layer is formed
  • garnish with coriander leaves
  • serve hot with Idli or Dosa



Yellow Moong Dal with Step-By-Step Photo Recipe


take 1 cup moong dal in a vessel


wash and add water in moong dal


place it in pressure cooker


pressure cook for 3 whistle


cooked dal


mash well using ladle or hand blender


heat oil in a pan


add mustard seeds, urad dal and hing, saute till dal turns color


add curry leaves, slitted green chillies and grated ginger, saute well


add thinly sliced onion


saute well till onion turn translucent


add chopped tomato


cook well till tomatoes turn mushy


add turmeric powder and salt, mix it


add mashed cooked moong dal and more water (consistency of the sambar should be very thin)


allow to cook and boil for 5-10 minutes or until frothy layer is formed


garnish with coriander leaves


mix well

moong dal sambar

serve hot with Idli and Dosa
